A home within yourself
So many of us long to feel at home somewhere. We work hard so we can buy or build a place that feels safe and solid. Often, we choose security over freedom. Most days of the week, we do things we don’t truly enjoy, just to make sure we have a home to come back to.
There’s nothing wrong with this lifestyle. It’s natural to want a house. But I’d like to look at the feeling of ‘home’ from a different point of view. A home found within yourself.
Feeling richer than ever
I’ve grown up very lucky, living in a big house and never having to worry about money. As a student I learned to live more modestly, renting small rooms here and there. It took some adjusting, but it also felt liberating in a way.
In my 30’s I chose to travel and live in Egypt for two years, where I realized I felt more at home there than any house I had lived in before. It was a humbe lifestyle, renting a tiny Bedouin house, feeling richer and more at peace than ever.
Now, back in the Netherlands, my life has become a nomadic one. I move from one home to another, living simply with just enough to get by. It’s scary and exhausting sometimes, but even though I have no place of my own, I’m starting to see it as an opportunity. A chance to build a home within myself first.
This nomad lifestyle is far from perfect. It wasn’t my plan at all, but after a year of not having solid ground beneath my feet, I’ve learned to trust life even when there’s no clear path ahead. I live by faith and inner guidance until the right moment comes to take a leap of faith towards something more solid.
Sometimes we need to be without the thing that makes us feel safe for a while, so we are encouraged to find safety within.
A home within yourself
Whether we live in a big house, a small rented apartment, or have no house at all, we all want to feel that sense of belonging, a home that can’t be taken away.
But when you connect your safety purely to something outside yourself, there will always be a lingering fear. A fear of losing it. Sometimes we do have the perfect house, but still we feel restless, unable to relax and unwind. I’ve been there, in a great relationship, in a lovely house, but on the inside I couldn’t find my peace. Maybe you’ve felt that too.
Imagine how peaceful it would feel if you could find a home within yourself, no matter your circumstances. Because the bricks of that inner house can’t be built from fear or lack, only from trust and wholeness.
When you live from that place, you no longer depend on the things around you. You stop fearing loss and begin to feel the freedom that comes from knowing you are already home. And maybe ‘home’ isn’t the roof over your head, but the freedom to be completely yourself. Not just behind closed doors, but out in the world.
Are you living your life in stress and fear, running after more external safety? Or are you coming from a place that already feels safe inside?
Feel free to share your thoughts and to leave a message. I’d love to hear from you.
“When you build a home within yourself, you’ve built the only house that can never crumble.”
